Palouse Car Show – 06/05/2010
On June 5th the wife and I went to Palouse to the car show. Partially because they're fun, also we had friends catering the event. This was the first major event I had gone to with my SLR in tow other than Boomershoot. The better statement is this is the first major event which also provided numerous pieces of eye candy. I made the mistake of not thinking that someone else may want to look at the photographs after the fact. I wasn't even there for 5 minutes and someone asked me for a card. All wasn't lost; I had my blogging business cards with me which has a link here.
I spent a lot of time processing the photographs. Some like this I left with a natural look. However many of them I processed to the point of looking more like art. The reason for this is it helps draw attention away from distracting objects in the back ground focusing your attention where I want it. I have learned that seriously photographing a car in a car show is a PITFA! Most of the cars are so close together and have a gloss paint job they reflect the vehicles right next to them.
This is very noticeable when vehicles are two very different colors like blue and red. Processing helped drown out the differences. I was lucky enough to spot someone moving an old ford Pickup for better pictures and snapped a few when it was moved.
Those pictures ended up being some of the best of the entire show, mainly due to the limited reflections and distractions in the pictures. I have some natural looking HDR shots as well, but doing the extra detail combined with the wall I think looks best.
The neatest thing of the entire show was that Lance Jasper was doing pin striping on site. I find that type of art absolutely amazing, even more so when you see it being done. I took a crap ton of pictures while he was doing the work. It's hard when the pin stripes are just accents of the color of the car. I did a bunch of exposure brackets hoping that I could get some to come out. I currently just have some of my initial HDR work that is decent. However I have been experimenting and produced the following:
If you don't see your car in the gallery I either didn't take a picture of it (sorry), or the picture didn't come out, or I just didn't find time to do it. If you car was there and want to see if I took a picture of it, or am reasonably sure I did, contact me. Just send me the color, make, model, and year. I'll look through the photos and see if I can find it. What is left is mainly stragglers and I have other projects I'm trying to do. Please note this is a hobby I fund entirely out of my own wallet, no one hired me to take any of these pictures and if you see them used elsewhere let me know.
